The-Devils-Breath-digital-coverNew Release!

One of Sydney Rye’s dear friends, Hugh Defry, has been accused of a brutal murder, but even though he has no memory of the night, Sydney believes he is incapable of such violence.

Called to investigate by Robert Maxim, a man she has until now, considered her greatest enemy, Sydney flies to Miami searching for the real killer. Rye’s suspicions are raised when she learns that Maxim not only wants to work together but also wants to build a friendship. She doesn’t begin to understand his motives until her former lover follows her to Florida to tell her a devastating secret.

As more people from her past turn up, and not knowing whom to trust, Sydney sees that her personal fight for justice has become something more than she had ever imagined and she is pushed towards making a decision that will change not just her life but possibly the future of the crime fighting.

Excerpt from The Devil's Breath is available on Emily's Website.

**My thoughts**

There is just something about Sydney Rye, that keeps bringing you back for more. We were left with a cliffhanger of sorts at the end of Book 4, so were antsy for this one to come out. At the same time, you don't necessarily need to have read the first four books to understand this one. All pertinent information about Sydney's past and her relationship with Hugh is explained enough at the beginning of this one. (I recommend reading them all. The first book is the one that will better explain her connection to Hugh, and the second one will tell you more about how she became who she is today.)

This is the first case in a long time that is much more personal for Sydney. Her dedication and connection to Hugh is deep-rooted, from many years ago, in her former life. Once Sydney gets started trying to right some wrongs, especially when she has an emotional attachment, look out! She is a fiercely determined woman who is going to get her own way, come hell or high water.

She is harder than she was before, and also a little jumpier, in some ways. She hasn't always been sure whom to trust, having been burned in the past, and always has someone coming after her. The real constant has always been Blue, though Mayberry and Dan have been around. Even so, she isn't able to fully let herself go with either of them, having so many unresolved issues.

It's fun to see some other older, familiar names pop back up, as Sydney's former team of cohorts comes out to help her. Throw in a continuing love triangle and some huge decisions for Sydney to make about her future, and you have yet another compelling, action-packed adventure for Sydney, with Blue by her side. Looking forward to book 6!
